PETITION AGAINST ELIMINATING RETIRED POLICE
OFFICERS FROM FILM UNIT DUTY AND/OR
PROPOSED UNIFORM CHANGE FOR FILM UNIT DUTY OFFICERS

To the Honorable Antonio Villaraigosa & Members of the Los Angeles City Council:

Attached to this letter you will see the signatures of the many individuals who support its message. These signatures belong to crew members, studio support staff, business owners, vendors, service providers and normal citizens such as accountants, caterers, car rental agencies, dry cleaners, make-up supply houses, and tent rental companies, all of whom depend on the entertainment industry for their livelihood.

We have been the “Film Capital of the World” for more than 80 years, and for good reason. No country, state or city has been as “film friendly” as Los Angeles, where local government support and cooperation has been the cornerstone of our relationship. We see that support diminishing, and we are apprehensive about the future.

The LAPD’s current proposal to effectively eliminate the use of retired LAPD officers, who have been a presence on productions for nearly 50 years, is currently the most disturbing. This proposal will reduce the flexibility of productions to accomplish their work, increase the cost to productions by nearly 100%, eliminate hundreds of retired officers who are familiar with the industry’s methods and operations, decrease public safety and generally be detrimental to production within the City of Los Angeles. LAPD’s alternative proposal, to change the uniform of the retired officers on film unit duty, making them unrecognizable as law enforcement officers, is equally detrimental.

We, the undersigned, are extremely concerned that the City of Los Angeles is turning its back on film, television, and commercial production, which encompasses approximately 250,000 taxpayers and thousands of small business owners. The lack of State and local incentives make it imperative to do whatever we can to keep production costs low to compete with the incentives in place nationwide and worldwide. We EMPHATICALLY URGE you to OPPOSE LAPD’s proposed changes as a demonstration of your previously stated support for the entertainment industry, and the 250,000 LA area residents it employs.
